Step by step

  1. 1. Get your PTIN

Obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number from the IRS first; the IRS lists it as step one.

  2. 2. Create a PSI profile

The online registration requires a user profile before you schedule and pay.

  3. 3. Choose a part, date and format

Test center or remote online proctoring; parts can be taken in any order on different days.

  4. 4. Pay $317

MasterCard, Visa or American Express, at the time of scheduling.

  5. 5. Keep your confirmation number

You need it to reschedule, cancel or change the appointment. Check the confirmation email for errors immediately.

Test-day ID rules

Bring one original, unexpired government-issued photo ID with your name, photo and signature. Your first and last name must exactly match your PSI registration. Military IDs are accepted at test centers (with photo and signature) but not for remote appointments. No valid ID = missed appointment and forfeited fee.

Prometric is gone

Older guides tell you to schedule through Prometric. The IRS now contracts with PSI for the SEE; Prometric-era scores still count toward the 3-year carryover.
